Telangana man makes video call to wife, then dies by suicide over betting losses

After making a video call to his wife and asking her to take care of their children, a Telangana man hanged himself over financial distress in cricket betting and investment schemes.

A 36-year-old man died by suicide in Telangana's Burgampahad after allegedly suffering financial losses in cricket betting and other investments, according to a complaint filed by his wife.

Just before his death, the man, Nageswara Rao, made a video call to his wife, Sadhanala Madhavi, and told her, "I am dying, take care of the children," before disconnecting the call.

In her complaint, Madhavi said the incident took place on September 8 and alleged that her husband had been under severe mental distress for about a week after losing all the money he had invested. She also accused a man identified as Veeru of causing Rao's financial losses.

Following the final video call, Rao’s family members began searching for him across the village. They found his bike parked near a water pumping station, following which he was found hanging from a shed amid agricultural fields.

His family members brought him down and rushed him to a private hospital, but he died on the way.

Police also received a purported suicide note, allegedly handwritten by Rao, which was found in the pocket of his T-shirt. According to the complaint, Rao allegedly named Veeru and accused him of financially cheating him and held him responsible for his death.

Madhavi alleged that Veeru had persuaded her husband to invest money in cricket betting and other schemes by promising high returns.

According to Madhavi, Rao had also discussed his financial losses with his friends, Duddhukuri Ramesh and Gollapudi Satyanarayana. She alleged that the two later informed the family about his financial difficulties.

Madhavi has urged Burgampahad police to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death and take legal action against Veeru over the alleged financial fraud.
