An 18-year-old woman from Myanmar has claimed that her husband repeatedly left her locked inside a rented house in Hyderabad and sent three friends to sexually assault her. The alleged assaults came to light on October 23, when the house owner broke open the lock after arriving to collect pending rent.

According to Humaira Tamanna's complaint, she had been living in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, when she met Mohammad Fayaz.

She said that Fayaz promised to marry her and brought her to India in May without informing her family. The two married in Hyderabad three to four days after their arrival.

About a month after the marriage, she claimed that Fayaz brought three of his friends — Ahmad Mujeeb, Noor Kamal and Zia-ur-Rehman — to stay at their rented house.

The three men are also described in the complaint as natives of Myanmar and residents of Hyderabad.

The woman claimed that Fayaz would leave the house after locking it from outside and send his friends inside, during which they sexually assaulted her. Two of them also threatened to kill her if she disclosed the assaults to anyone.

Fear and uncertainty about where to seek help prevented her from reporting the alleged abuse earlier, she said.

The case came to light on October 23, when the house owner arrived to collect the pending rent and found the house locked from outside. He broke open the lock, allowing the woman to leave.

She then contacted her family using another person's mobile phone and was taken to a relative's house.

On October 26, her relative, Mohammad Rasheed, took her to a police station, where she lodged her complaint.

An FIR has been registered, and the four men have been charged with rape, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation.
