The Western Railway Mumbai Division celebrated the 34th anniversary of Mumbai’s iconic ladies special local train service by distributing roses to women passengers travelling on one of its dedicated suburban services.
The official account of the Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division of Western Railway, shared a video of the celebration on X and said the women-only local train service marked a significant milestone in suburban travel.
“Western Railway Mumbai Division marked a milestone in suburban travel by introducing the world’s first women-only ‘Ladies Special’ local on May 5, 1992,” the post read.
The railway division added that the service has spent over three decades empowering women commuters by providing safer and dedicated travel facilities.
To mark the occasion, ticket-checking staff distributed roses to passengers travelling on the 5:39 ladies special train.
“Western Railway Mumbai Division celebrated 34th anniversary of ladies special local with a token of love. Roses were distributed to passengers in 5:39 ladies special train by ticket checking staff,” the caption accompanying the video said.
The clip showed several women commuters smiling as they received roses from railway staff. Many passengers also posed for photographs during the celebration inside the train.
Mumbai’s ladies special local trains were introduced to offer women commuters a safer and more comfortable travel experience in the city’s crowded suburban railway network. Over the years, the service has become an important part of daily travel for thousands of women across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
