Britain's BBC is set to announce hundreds of job cuts across its core news division next week as part of a wider cost-reduction programme that could ultimately result in around 2,000 positions being eliminated across the organisation.

Teams across the broadcaster have been instructed to reduce spending by roughly 10 per cent under broader plans aimed at saving hundreds of millions of pounds, according to the Financial Times (FT). The BBC's news division is expected to be the first department to unveil its restructuring proposals next week, as reported by Reuters.

Hundreds of roles are likely to be affected within the news division, which accounts for roughly a quarter of the broadcaster's workforce of more than 20,000 employees. Sources familiar with the matter told the newspaper that the scale of cuts in news operations is expected to exceed those in many other departments because staffing represents the largest share of spending in the division.

NEWS OPERATION FACE DEEPER CUTS

The BBC's news operation, which provides content for television channels, digital platforms, websites, apps, and regional services, has reportedly been assigned a cost-cutting target of around 15 per cent, higher than the average reduction expected across the corporation.

This could lead to significant redundancies and changes to some radio programmes and other services that audiences may notice.

Richard Burgess, the director of news and content, who is responsible for more than 800 journalists, said on a video call that the entire news division can expect to make cost cuts of “around 15%”, with job reductions expected to be a major component of the savings plan, reports The Guardian.

Last month, BBC staff were informed that approximately 10 per cent of the corporation's workforce of about 21,500 employees could be affected under a £600 million savings programme. However, it was not clear at the time that the news division would face a steeper reduction target than most other areas.

The report noted that other departments, including content teams, may have greater flexibility to achieve savings through non-staff expenditure reductions. In contrast, the news division's heavy reliance on personnel spending makes workforce reductions more likely.

LEADERSHIP TRANSITION AMID RESTRUCTURING

The planned restructuring comes during a period of leadership transition at the public broadcaster. Matt Brittin, a former senior Google executive, is set to take over as the BBC's new director general from May 18, as reported by The Guardian.

The BBC has not yet publicly announced the final details of the proposed cuts, but the expected changes would mark one of the broadcaster's most significant downsizing exercises in the past 15 years.
