US grocery and retail technology major Hy-Vee has abruptly shuttered its India engineering centre, eliminating approximately 150 roles overnight. Affected employees were blindsided by the decision during an unexpected, late-night Microsoft Teams call at 9:00 PM, where they were informed that the entire local unit was being dissolved as part of a global corporate restructuring exercise.

The closure was officially confirmed on social media by Amit Goel, Hy-Vee’s Director of Engineering in India, who praised the high caliber of the displaced team. Goel noted that the engineering division had been carefully assembled in recent months, pulling top-tier talent from major e-commerce and technology giants like Amazon and Myntra. He immediately began to use his network to find jobs for the affected professionals.

The sudden nature of the layoff has triggered intense online debate, especially regarding the lack of prior notice and standard exit terms.  Some of the impacted workers took to social media sites like Reddit to share their stories of having their access to corporate networks cut off almost immediately after the short video call ended. Many of those let go had been with the Iowa-based retailer for nearly two years, having initially joined as interns before moving into full-time engineering positions.

While industry experts point out that mid-sized US retail and service firms are increasingly consolidating offshore tech roles closer to their headquarters due to cost pressures, Hy-Vee itself has not yet issued an official public statement regarding the center’s closure or the specific exit terms. The workforce reduction underscores a broader uncertainty facing Indian tech professionals working within global capability centers during corporate realignments.
