Bhubaneswar: With just two days left before the beginning of the holy month of Kartika, non-vegetarian markets across Odisha are witnessing a massive rush of customers. Many people are stocking up on their favourite fish and meat dishes before observing a month-long vegetarian diet in keeping with religious traditions.

In several Odia households, Kartika month is observed with strict dietary restrictions, with fish, meat, eggs and, in some cases, even onion and garlic excluded from daily meals. As a result, demand for non-vegetarian items has surged sharply in the final 48 hours before the month begins.

The rush has drawn comparisons with Chhadakhai, the day when people traditionally return to eating non-vegetarian food after a one month.  Fish, chicken and mutton sellers are experiencing a significant increase in customers as families make their last purchases before the month-long observance.

Traders say sales of fish and meat typically decline by more than 50 per cent during the month of Kartika. Anticipating the seasonal slowdown, many vendors are stocking additional supplies during the final days in an effort to maximise sales and profits.

The sharp rise in demand has also pushed up prices. Mutton, chicken and various varieties of fish have reportedly become more expensive as sellers respond to the surge in customer numbers.

With the start of Kartika month approaching, the non-vegetarian markets remain crowded, reflecting the strong influence of religious customs on food habits and seasonal trade across Odisha.
