Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced insurance benefits with two of its prepaid recharge plans, offering subscribers accidental-death coverage of up to ₹1 lakh and cyber-fraud protection of up to ₹10,000.

The offer, introduced on October 1, 2026, is part of the telecom operator’s effort to provide additional benefits alongside mobile connectivity.

BSNL has partnered with The Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OICL) to provide the coverage.

What Do the Two Recharge Plans Offer?

The insurance benefits are available with BSNL’s Special Tariff Voucher (STV) plans priced at ₹202 and ₹2,449.

The ₹202 plan offers 300 minutes of voice calls, 5GB of data, and 100 SMS, with a reported validity of 32 days. The ₹2,449 annual plan provides unlimited voice calling, 2GB of data per day and 100 SMS per day for 365 days.

Eligible subscribers receive the insurance benefits without paying a separate premium beyond the recharge price.

Accident and Cyber-Fraud Coverage

Under the offer, the accidental-death component provides coverage of up to ₹1 lakh, while the cyber-insurance component covers eligible losses caused by online fraud up to ₹10,000.

Reported covered incidents include certain accidents involving road accidents, burns, electrocution and lightning. Cyber-fraud protection may cover eligible cases such as phishing and online theft, subject to the insurer’s terms and conditions.

Subscribers should check the policy wording for exclusions, eligibility requirements and claim procedures before relying on the coverage.

When Does the Insurance Become Active?

The insurance benefit is reported to activate automatically within 24 hours of an eligible recharge. Policy information is expected to be sent to subscribers through SMS.

For cyber-fraud claims, the subscriber’s BSNL number must be linked to a bank account, and the incident must be reported within the prescribed period.

Subscribers should retain recharge confirmations and follow the insurer’s official instructions when filing a claim.

The offer gives BSNL customers an additional form of financial protection alongside their mobile services. However, the actual payout will depend on the policy terms and whether the incident meets the insurer’s eligibility criteria.
