New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Monday announced in Evian, France that a deal with Iran has been signed and the Strait of Hormuz is already partially reopened.

“The deal is all signed and the Strait of Hormuz is already partially opened…Ships are starting to go out now and on Friday it will be completely opened,” Trump said.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transit, was effectively blocked earlier this month amid heightened US-Iran tensions following military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran’s parliament had approved a measure to close the strait, through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil passes. The closure raised fears of supply disruption and spiked global oil prices. The reported deal signals a potential de-escalation and resumption of normal maritime traffic.
