Mumbai: India’s consumer goods bellwether Hindustan Unilever Limited delivered a resilient September quarter performance, recording a 7% underlying volume expansion despite persistent inflationary headwinds and patchy monsoon rains across the country.
Presenting the second-quarter financial review in Mumbai on Wednesday, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Priya Nair alongside Chief Financial Officer Niranjan Gupta mapped out an aggressive operating blueprint centered on volume-backed profitability, capital discipline, and expanding footprint across premium and mass tiers.
The consumer giant signaled that rural demand is accelerating quarter after quarter, outpacing broader historical slowdowns even as urban consumption holds firm. Management stressed that broader macroeconomic structural shifts are blunting the impact of sub-par monsoon showers. Agriculture accounts for under 15% of India’s GDP today, while minimum support price revisions of 5% to 6% and expanded budgetary allocations under MGNREGA are providing tangible upward momentum to rural earnings.
Nair tied the company’s outlook directly to broader national growth metrics. Pointing to the country’s 7.8% GDP print in the previous quarter and sustained projections above the 7% threshold, she noted that the company’s brand assortment leaves it strategically positioned to benefit from demand expansion and eventually build toward double-digit gains. High-frequency barometers—most notably automobile dispatches and goods and services tax collections—reinforce this underlying domestic strength.
Operating margins stayed locked within the company’s guided corridor of 20% to 24%. While acknowledging that cyclical input cost spikes create transient friction, Gupta emphasized that inflationary phases demand equal vigilance over top-line expansion and bottom-line health. To balance volume and absolute profitability, the firm is tilting its product mix toward higher-margin premium skincare and liquid detergents.

Capital allocation discipline was underscored by a 30% year-on-year surge in operating cash flows across the first half of the fiscal year. Capital expenditure has been dialed up to 2% to 3% of overall turnover to build out liquid manufacturing capacity, run alongside ongoing dividend distributions, and support inorganic opportunities.
Marketing investments were similarly recalibrated to shield consumer wallets. Gupta disclosed that advertising outlays for Home Care were pared by ₹200 crore to curb retail price hikes, while marketing budgets for personal care and the foods basket were bumped up by ₹100 crore. These tactical realignments lifted the company’s Share of Voice to Share of Market index to 1.1.
Across product categories:
- Oral Care: The Closeup brand captured robust quarter-on-quarter market share advances in both the freshness and whitening brackets.
- Foods and Refreshments: Lifestyle nutrition marked six straight quarters of solid expansion, while Kissan sauces gained fresh traction on the back of a recent brand relaunch. In contrast, mass tea experienced cost-driven volume contraction.
- Health and Nutrition: Nair identified a massive runway in protein, pointing out that nationwide penetration lingers in single digits. The strategic mandate for Horlicks is to widen access across India by offering protein options priced 40% to 50% below niche, premium alternatives.
Mass consumption lines continue to demonstrate steady resilience, while higher-tier premium offerings are scaling at a rapid clip, positioning the FMCG major to capture the next wave of domestic spending.
