Bajaj Electric Motorcycle Launch Plans Revealed – Export Markets First
by Satya Singh · RushLaneA truly global product, Bajaj electric motorcycle will make its debut in export markets before being introduced in India
Bajaj has tasted success in the electric two-wheeler segment with Chetak capturing a market share of over 22%. In the list of bestselling electric two-wheeler brands, Bajaj is ranked second, after TVS. To sustain this momentum, Bajaj will be introducing new variants of Chetak in the coming weeks. Bajaj is also working on a brand new electric motorcycle, which is likely to be positioned as a premium product offering.
Bajaj new electric motorcycle – What to expect?
Development of a new electric motorcycle has been confirmed by Dinesh Thapar, Chief Financial Officer at Bajaj. Dinesh talked about this development during the company’s Q1, FY27 Earnings Conference Call. He said that the bike’s development is progressing at a steady pace. If everything works out as per plans, Bajaj’s first electric motorcycle could be launched around FY28.
Dinesh said that the new electric bike will be initially targeted at export markets. Launch in India is expected later, likely in late 2028 or early 2029. Bajaj will be keen to capture this segment, since it has huge growth potential. India’s electric two-wheeler segment is dominated by electric scooters, with a market share of more than 95%.
Moreover, there are only a few players in the electric motorcycle segment. Established brands like Hero, TVS and Honda are yet to offer any electric motorcycle in India. These scenarios present a good opportunity for Bajaj. The brand has a large global presence, which can be leveraged for its new electric motorcycle.
While the electric motorcycle is confirmed, Bajaj has not shared any technical specifications. It is likely that the project is currently in an early development phase, with internal testing of various components. It will be interesting to see if Bajaj launches its first-ever electric motorcycle under the Pulsar brand or chooses an entirely new brand.
Favourable market conditions
In India, the current preference is apparently for electric scooters. However, electric motorcycles could also witness increased demand when established brands like Bajaj enter this space. Bajaj’s new electric motorcycle and its existing Chetak lineup could benefit from the evolving policy landscape. For example, Delhi government has plans to completely stop ICE two-wheeler sales from 1st April, 2028.
Similar rules could be implemented in other cities or states in the future. Such developments will result in a huge demand surge for electric two-wheelers. Brands that are ready with the right product stand to gain. Bajaj has also stated that it will be introducing new variants of the Chetak in the next 6 weeks. These will help cater to the peak festive season demand.
Bajaj has already increased production capacity of Chetak from 50,000 units to 60,000 units per month. Bajaj is also aiming to increase its overall production capacity from the current 7.2 million units to over 9 million units per annum. This increased production capacity will be utilized primarily for electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers and premium motorcycles.
