MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Dita Angara-Mathay as the new secretary of the Department of Tourism (DOT), Malacañang announced on Friday, April 10.

The position was previously held by officer-in-charge Verna Buensuceso when Christina Frasco was transferred into the role of Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities.

The Palace said that this appointment brings into the fold “a seasoned public servant with decades of experience in trade, investment and international economic engagement.”

Malacañang said that Angara-Mathay has a long history of leading programs that promote global linkages and strengthening industries.

“With her appointment, the administration aims to further align tourism with economic growth attracting more investments, supporting local industries, and ensuring that the gains from tourism are felt across the regions,” the Palace stated.

The DOT had a change in leadership after Frasco was criticized for using the agency’s resources for self-promotion.

Rumors of Frasco being replaced had circulated around the internet, with Angara-Mathay often being named as her possible replacement.

The DOT welcomed Angara-Mathay’s appointment, saying she brings significant experience with her.

“The entire Department stands united in working closely with her, alongside stakeholders across government, industry, local communities, and the private sector, to advance a more connected, competitive, sustainable, and resilient Philippine tourism industry,” the DOT said.

Who is Angara-Mathay?

Prior to her appointment, Angara-Mathay was the commercial counselor at the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Tokyo, Japan. She often represented the country in trade dialogues and summits.

During her stint as a trade diplomat in Tokyo, the Philippines was able to secure P51 billion in new investments in 2025. Some of the key companies included in this commitment were Koshidaka Holdings, Marubeni Corporation, Sojitz Corporation, as well as Mitsui & Co.

Angara-Mathay is married to Robbie Mathay, the former president of the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority.
