PNP ready to aid rice price cap watch

MANILA, Philippines — As the government prepares to impose a price cap on imported rice, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has expressed readiness to provide the muscle to ensure compliance of retailers.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. yesterday ordered field commanders to deploy police officers in public markets and grocery stores in the country to check if retailers are following the official rates set by the government on rice.

“Our personnel will also work closely with local chief executives regarding this matter,” he said.

The Department of Agriculture earlier said it is planning to tap the PNP and the trade and industry department to monitor if retailers are complying with the proposed price cap.
