Mike Johnson says Congress could work with Trump on $5,000 checks but makes no promise
by By Bisma Saleem · The News InternationalHouse Speaker Mike Johnson has stopped short of guaranteeing President Donald Trump’s promised $5,000 payments to American adults if Republicans retain control of Congress.
Trump announced the proposed “Trump dividend” at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, promising the payments if his party performs well in the elections.
“So if the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend,” Trump said.
Asked on NBC News’ Meet the Press whether he would commit to delivering the payments, Johnson said: “I commit that Congress will work through it and find consensus on that, like I have to do everything else.”
“I never go out and give big commitments on the front end because I’ve got to work through it, and that’s what we do every single day,” he added.
Johnson said he would work “hand in hand” with Trump to deliver for Americans.
The proposal has raised concerns among Democrats, Republicans and economists over its potential impact on inflation and the national debt.
Payments of $5,000 to every US adult could cost about $1.3 trillion.
Johnson insisted he does not want to increase the national debt and argued the proposal would not add to it if implemented.
