White House shooting suspect writes, 'I don’t expect forgiveness' as authorities investigate

Authorities are reviewing writings linked to a suspect accused of opening fire near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, as investigators work to establish a motive.

According to officials cited by CNN, the suspect, 31 year old Cole Tomas Allen from California, sent a message to family members before the attack.

The note began: “Let me start off by apologizing to everyone whose trust I abused,” and added: “I don’t expect forgiveness.”

Investigators say the message expressed political anger and indicated an intention to target administration officials.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN the suspect “got off a couple shots” and injured a Secret Service agent wearing a protective vest before being detained.

“We’re still looking to try to understand a motive. From our preliminary investigation, it does appear the suspect was targeting members of the administration,” Blanche said.

Officials say the suspect travelled from California to Washington, carrying firearms purchased legally. They are now examining his social media activity and background, including reports of political activism in recent years.

The suspect faces charges including use of a firearm and assault on a federal officer.
