Nintendo Is Doing Its Best To Make Sure Switch Overtakes PS2

A deal? A succulent Switch deal?

What's this? A console doing down in price? What madness is this?

Yes, in an apparent effort to shift its remaining stock in Europe, Nintendo is selling a Switch and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle for a discounted price of €199.99. It's due for release on 29th October 2026.

As a reminder, Nintendo is discontinuing the original Switch in Europe from February 2027, likely due to the new regulatory requirements regarding replaceable batteries. Essentially, rather than waste time (and money) revising a console that's nearly 10 years old, Nintendo has instead opted to stop selling it altogether in favour of the Switch 2.

So with only a handful of months left until distribution ceases in Europe, Nintendo is doing its utmost to shift as many remaining consoles as possible. Yes, our headline regarding PS2 sales is partly in jest, but this latest effort could see Nintendo inch ever closer to that 160 million unit goal. Truth be told, the company probably won't care if it beats the PS2 either way, but we will. We will.

It's also worth noting that while Nintendo often opts to bundle digital copies of games with its hardware, this particular bundle appears to include a physical edition of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so that should sweeten the deal even more.

So if you're still in the market for an original Switch and you happen to reside in Europe, this could be a pretty tempting offer.

200 bucks for a switch and Mario Kart 8 is really good. If you're buying a switch Mario Kart is inevitable. And they probably want to get rid of as much stock as possible before the whole battery thing

i could see this helping to push switch 1 over the threshold, but you gotta hope it's a substantial bump from europe for this to make a difference. also, don't expect to even begin to notice a difference from this for a while, next quarter ends on the 30th so it'll be a looong time before q3 reveals anything.

Whatever happened to the story about Nintendo releasing the OG Switch over in the Indian market where it's never previously been available.

One hopes that Nintendo does manage to overtake the PS2. Currently, the Switch appears to be at about 156.59 million units sold. But, as others have said (albeit in jest), it might be possible that Sony "finds" a few million extra consoles lying around if Nintendo starts getting close to that 160 million number just so they can stay on top.

Although, if Nintendo so chooses, they could always lump in Switch 2 sales with the original Switch, just like they did with the Game Boy Color and the original Game Boy line, even though the latter two systems are very different. That would easily put Nintendo over the 160 million threshold.

@Member_the_game still only technically rumors, and the rumors only suggested they would start releasing it in 2027.
