New Zealand's car rental industry is experiencing sustained growth, driven by rising tourism numbers and increasing demand for group transport solutions. According to IBISWorld, as cited by Scoop News, the country's passenger car rental and hiring industry reached NZ$2.3 billion in 2025, with revenue growing at a compound annual rate of 7.6% over the past five years across 682 businesses operating nationwide. Much of that growth is being shaped by travellers seeking practical, cost-effective alternatives to multiple smaller vehicles or expensive private transfers.

Among the segments responding to this demand are larger passenger vans capable of moving groups of eight to ten people in a single trip. Groups organising weekend getaways, family holidays, or corporate travel are increasingly booking 10-seater van hire in Auckland as a straightforward way to keep everyone together while managing luggage and travel costs. Automatic transmission and air conditioning have become standard expectations for this vehicle category, reflecting a broader shift toward comfort-focused group travel.

Outside the main metropolitan centres, regional demand is also climbing. For visitors working their way through the South Island, car rental in Nelson has become a practical gateway to destinations including the Abel Tasman National Park, Golden Bay, and the Marlborough wine region. Providers such as NZRAC have expanded their network of independently owned branches to serve both major arrival points and regional hubs, enabling travellers to pick up vehicles close to where their itinerary begins rather than backtracking from larger cities.

Statista Market Forecast projects the New Zealand car rentals market will reach US$246.40 million (approximately NZ$418.9 million) by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 3.17% through to that year. That trajectory reflects continued confidence in inbound tourism and the enduring preference among domestic and international travellers alike for flexible, self-directed transport across the country.
