Car Rental Demand Rises Across New Zealand As Tourism And Group Travel Expand

by · SCOOP

New Zealand's car rental industry is experiencing sustained growth, driven by a resurgence in international tourism and increasing demand from group and corporate travellers. According to Scoop Business, the country's passenger car rental and hiring industry reached NZ$2.3 billion in 2025, with 682 businesses operating nationwide and revenue growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7.6% over the past five years. Statista projects further expansion, forecasting the market will reach US$246.40 million (approximately NZ$418.9 million) by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 3.17% between 2024 and 2029.

This growth is being felt across the country, including in Auckland's northern suburbs, where suburban and regional travellers are increasingly seeking alternatives to CBD or airport-based hire depots. Visitors and residents on Auckland's North Shore, for instance, can book car hire in Albany through a Glenfield-based depot that offers a range of vehicles from compact cars to SUVs, along with one-way hire options to branches nationwide.

In the South Island, the picture is similar. Dunedin has seen growing interest from both domestic and international travellers requiring larger vehicles for regional exploration and group transport. Van rental in Dunedin has expanded in step with this demand, reflecting a broader national shift toward flexible, multi-passenger vehicle options that suit families, sports clubs, and corporate teams alike.

Providers such as NZRAC have positioned themselves to respond to these trends through a network of independently owned branches offering localised service across both islands. With one-way hire flexibility, roadside support, and a diverse fleet, the company reflects the kind of adaptable, nationally distributed model that the current market increasingly favours.
