Attempted Robbery Foiled at the Nissim de Camondo Museum in Paris

An attempted robbery at the Musée Nissim de Camondo in Paris was foiled on Saturday night.

Le Parisien first reported that the suspect fled when the museum’s alarm system was triggered, prompting Paris police to launch an investigation. Investigators are analyzing CCTV footage of the break-in. The thief reportedly smashed a window near the rear of the museum to gain entry. However, startled by the activation of the security system, the suspect fled the scene without stealing any loot.

The Paris prosecutor’s office announced Monday morning that a suspect has been identified, but no arrests have been made as of this writing. An investigation has been opened into “attempted burglary of a dwelling or storage facility,” the prosecutor’s office told AFP on Sunday, adding that “no artwork appears to have been stolen.”

The Musée Nissim de Camondo, which houses one of the finest collections of 18th-century art in France, is located in Paris’s upscale 8th arrondissement. It has been undergoing renovations and is scheduled to reopen in 2030.

The thwarted robbery is the latest in a string of thefts targeting museums across Europe, most notably the high-profile heist at the Louvre in October 2025. In July, France’s Ministry of Culture recommended temporarily removing high-value objects from display as part of a broader plan to strengthen security at museums.
