YKK Breaks Ground on $150 Million Plant in India

YKK is expanding its manufacturing footprint in India with a $150 million plant near Chennai, adding capacity to supply customers producing for domestic and export markets.

The Japanese fastening products manufacturer held a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 25 for the facility at the Origins Chennai industrial park in Tamil Nadu. Construction is scheduled for completion in February 2028.

YKK first announced plans for the facility in June. The September groundbreaking marks the start of construction on the project.

The plant will be YKK India’s third in the country and will operate in coordination with its two existing plants in the northern state of Haryana. The investment covers land, buildings, machinery, equipment and other costs.

The southern India site spans nearly 150,000 square meters, with a planned building area of approximately 74,700 square meters. YKK said the facility would bring together its manufacturing technologies to meet a range of customer needs as it anticipates further growth in India’s domestic and export-oriented manufacturing markets.

The company also said the project would create local employment opportunities, though the announcement did not specify a hiring target or planned production capacity.

Approximately 40 people attended the groundbreaking, including YKK India managing director Jin Deguchi.

The company is also adding manufacturing capacity in Vietnam. In January, YKK broke ground on an $83.6 million expansion of its Nhon Trach factory, with building completion scheduled for May 2027. YKK said the project would use advanced automation to increase production capacity and strengthen product development, supporting the Vietnamese operation’s role as a technology hub for Southeast Asia.

Founded in Tokyo in 1934, YKK produces zippers, plastic hardware, hook-and-loop fasteners, webbing tapes, snaps and buttons, with operations in approximately 70 countries and regions.
