Prabal Gurung Resort 2027: ‘First Light’

Prabal Gurung is an early bird.

The designer wakes up at 5 every morning, and the first thing he does is make his bed “because if nothing else, at least then I know I’ve accomplished something.”

After that, he immediately jumps into meditation, and it’s in this moment of zen that Gurung says he feels most inspired, both by New York and the women who inhabit it. “I see them going to work or coming back from a late night,” he explained over Zoom, “and that’s the beauty of it. It’s almost like a romance I have with the city.”

Those two archetypes — the fabulously disheveled party girl on her walk of no-shame and the suited-up CEO on her way to the office — act like ships passing in Gurung’s resort look book, appropriately titled “First Light.”

“I wanted to capture the spirit of this woman when she’s by herself…My idea was: those two can coexist.” Not only can they coexist, they can flirt with one another’s wardrobes, eliminating the boundary between day and night, dressed and undressed, creating one mode that works around the clock.

Take Gurung’s elongated collarless jackets with softly fluted hips. Cut from thick crepe, they gave structure to sheer chiffon skirts with dip and step hemlines. Elsewhere, a divine trenchcoat in champagne-colored silk jacquard worn half-open like a bathrobe flashing knickers underneath got a touch more proper thanks to a cardigan tied around the shoulders. “It should just feel like it’s hugging you, caressing you,” offered Gurung.

Knitwear, which he produces in his native Nepal, is big business for Gurung’s brand, and he elevated another one of those cardigans with beaded organza flowers, providing a rich textural moment that otherwise felt lacking in this collection.

When it delivers during the holiday season, Gurung’s two muses will likely part ways. One might hang around locally to watch the ball drop in a fitted sequin sheath, while the other might jet off somewhere more tropical where a warm breeze can pick up her Berber striped halter set.

“She could be any part of anywhere in the world,” Gurung explained, “because the sunrise in New York, in Kathmandu, in Tangier, it’s the same.”
