As the warmer days of summer fade into memory, many Scots are bracing themselves against the onslaught of wet and windy weather, seeking ways to keep warm.
The arrival of autumn often signals a rise in heating usage. However, with the energy price cap having risen from October 1, and the Winter Fuel Payment no longer accessible for millions, people are on the hunt for methods to cut down on heating expenses.
To address this issue, a man known as @thatpropertyguy on social media took to TikTok to share his top six tips for maintaining a cosy home without cranking up the thermostat.
Bleed your radiators
This property guru suggests that one simple way to immediately enhance your home's energy efficiency is to bleed your radiators. Bleeding radiators release trapped air that can impede hot water circulation, thus reducing the heat output of your radiators, reports the Mirror.
Consequently, bleeding them boosts their efficiency, meaning you won't need to crank up your heating as much. To bleed your radiators, turn off the heating, open the bleed valve, listen for the escaping air, and then close it again.
Open the oven door after cooking
After cooking, leave your oven door slightly open to release heat into the room at no extra cost. Make sure the oven is turned off to prevent wasting energy.
Closing curtains
The thrifty TikToker shared another easy tip to heat your home - close your blinds and curtains. He explained that this minor adjustment helps keep warmth in the room, making your home more energy-efficient.
Foil behind radiators
Putting aluminium foil behind your radiators is another excellent way to retain heat. The property enthusiast detailed how this works by reflecting radiator heat back into the room, stopping it from escaping through the wall.
You might already have aluminium foil in your kitchen cupboard, but if not, you can pick it up from the supermarket for around £1.75.
Leave a gap between radiator and sofa
Creating a space between your radiator and sofa is another simple hack to make your home warmer. This is because it allows heat to circulate freely around the room, while also safeguarding the sofa from damage.
Shut doors behind you
Lastly, by simply closing all doors in your home, you can significantly boost the warmth of your abode. This tactic prevents heat from slipping away from rooms, which can save you from having to amp up your thermostat.
The TikToker's video clearly struck a chord, racking up over 2.2 million views on the social media site. Enthusiastic TikTok users poured into the comment section of the post to express their reactions.
One user was thrilled, commenting: "I didn't know the foil trick, that's ace! " Another added: "My house is like an icebox, so I'm now trying the foil trick."
Meanwhile, a third remarked: "I always leave my oven door open after use, I thought I was the only one to do this".
