Aug 6 : SpaceX and Tesla will initially invest $16.8 billion to build Terafab, Elon Musk's planned advanced AI chip manufacturing complex in Grimes County, Texas, the aerospace company said on Thursday.
Terafab is intended to narrow the gap between existing global chip supply and the computing capacity SpaceX and Tesla expect to require in the coming years.
Combined demand from SpaceX and Tesla is forecast to top 1 terawatt of computing power, well beyond current global output.
Musk has said the Terafab will handle each step of chip production, including the design.
Tesla broke ground in April on a research fab at the North Campus of its Giga Texas plant, a precursor to Terafab.
