GANTA, Nimba County — What began as a celebration of the arrival of Nimba County’s share of the government’s yellow machines turned tragic on Saturday, October 31 near the Ganta Checkpoint when the Town Chief of Garr Gbeassila, Franklin Yeekpeh was allegedly hit by Nimba County District Number 3 Representative Nehker Gaye’s vehicle.

The celebration began in Sokopa Town, located between Bong and Nimba Counties where a large number of Nimbaians gathered near the St. John River to receive the county’s share of the yellow machines.

The convoy later moved toward Ganta City.
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly before the convoy reached the Ganta Immigration Checkpoint.

Town Chief Yeekpeh, who had joined the celebration from Sokopa Town in Electoral District Number 8, was allegedly struck by Rep. Gaye’s vehicle near the Ganta Checkpoint.

Garr Gbeassila Town Chief Yeekpeh reportedly suffered a serious injury on his foot, which was later amputated following the incident.

Rep. Gaye told FrontPage Africa that after the incident, he took the town chief to the Ganta United Methodist Hospital for medical treatment.

He said he also contacted Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeah Gono to ensure that Yeekpeh receives proper care.

Rep. Gaye said his vehicle was behind vehicles carrying the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) Political Leader and District Number 7 Representative Musa Bility when Town Chief Yeekpeh, who according to the lawmaker, was riding a motorbike, allegedly came from behind and hit his vehicle.

Rep. Gaye further alleged that after the incident, Nimba County Police Commander Lamie Mendee instructed him to take the victim to the hospital before any investigation or scene assessment could be conducted to determine who was at fault.

As of press time, Police in Nimba County had not impounded Rep. Gaye’s vehicle, which remained free.

Meanwhile, Police in Ganta report that more than 35 people have reportedly lost their lives in road accidents around Ganta and its surrounding areas within less than a year, as road accidents continue to occur in Nimba County.
