A Sister Stood Up for Her Brother’s Girlfriend After His $500 Dinner Test Went Too Far

· Bright Side — Inspiration. Creativity. Wonder.

Money can make love feel complicated, especially when someone starts wondering whether they’re wanted for themselves or for their finances. One sister shared on Reddit how her 27-year-old brother secretly turned six months of dating into a series of tests his girlfriend never agreed to take. What she found out changed how she saw him, and put their sibling bond and his idea of honesty to the test of their own.

My brother is 27, works incredibly hard, and has done very well for himself. He’d been dating his girlfriend for six months, and over that time she and I got close. We both love hair, makeup and shopping, so we just clicked.

Last week she messaged me. She said she’d love to keep hanging out, but it felt wrong now, because I’m his sister and the two of them had broken up. When I asked why, she said she was tired of “auditioning” to prove she was with him for the right reasons.

Then she listed what he’d been doing. He’d leave his bank statements out on their bed and get upset when she picked them up. He’d ask to go to expensive restaurants, then leave his wallet at home so she’d have to pay. And he never bought her a single gift, then questioned her when she asked why.

We’ve always been the kind of siblings who tell each other everything, so I asked him. He said every word was true. To him, honesty in a relationship starts with knowing why someone is there. He told me he left the statements on the bed on purpose and watched through a gap in the door to see if she’d be curious. When she picked them up, he felt sure she was interested in his money.

So he set up the restaurant test. He picked the place himself and left his wallet at home, so she was stuck with a $500 bill. She was upset, of course. As his sister, I asked whether it might matter that she’s an elementary school teacher. He said no. For most teachers, $500 is a big part of a month’s paycheck.

The final straw for him was the gift question. In six months, she’d bought him a gaming console and new rims for his car. He’d bought her nothing. When she asked why, he decided she was hinting for something expensive.

She later told me she’d stretched her own finances for those gifts, spending nearly a whole paycheck from her savings while still paying off student loans and credit cards. When he finally told her he thought she was with him for the money, she ended things and blocked his number.

He was hurt and angry. He said she’d only been after his money, and when I didn’t agree, he turned on me. He said a sister could never understand what it’s like to have money and worry about being used.

I told him I understood the worry, but honesty goes both ways, and no one would put up with tests like his. If he wants to know someone loves him for himself, he could date women with similar finances, or simply be genuine from the start. It was our first real fight as siblings.

Later he told me it’s hard to find a woman as wealthy as he is, so he plans to keep testing the ones he dates. Honesty has always been our thing as siblings, so I suggested he talk to a therapist. He didn’t like that.

My boyfriend’s paycheck is nothing like my brother’s, and he still brings me $12 flowers every other week. My brother says that’s different, because women expect more from a man with his finances.

Readers had a lot to say, and most of them turned the “gold digger” label right back on him.
“It kinda sounds like HE’S the gold digger tbh,” one wrote (© KyonaAidoneus / Reddit). Another pointed out who actually paid for everything: “Someone was using the other person in this relationship, all right, but it wasn’t the girlfriend.” (© boudicas_shield / Reddit). And one teacher put the $500 dinner into real numbers: “500 dollars is 50 shy of my rent. And a fourth of my monthly teacher’s salary. I’m not sure I’d manage to swallow the food let alone the bill.” (© rndmly-gnr8td-usrnm / Reddit).

But a second camp understood his fear and only objected to how he handled it. “I sort of get the desire to see if she was just using him, but his way about doing so” went far too far, one reader wrote (© Reddit). Others offered more practical fixes: “Your brother knows there are such things as prenups, yeah?” (© OrangeJuliusPage / Reddit). And one comment flipped the whole idea around: “If he was really worried about his wealth affecting his relationships, he wouldn’t be flaunting it.” (© FireflySky86 / Reddit).
