A MAN who left a female victim “consumed by fear, anxiety and emotional trauma” during a six-month course of “appalling” abuse has been jailed for nine months.
Jake Gallichan appeared in the Royal Court yesterday to be sentenced for domestic abuse.
The 31-year-old was also sentenced for a single offence of malicious damage, having “ripped the internal door handle off” the passenger side of the complainant’s car.
Crown Advocate Carla Carvalho, prosecuting, said the victim had detailed “a history of controlling and coercive behaviour” and had also threatened to “burn” the flat the woman lived in.
In a text read out in court, he said: “I’ve got £20 I’m sure that will be enough petrol to pour over the house and set on fire”, before adding: “Let’s see if the police can get here before the fire starts.”
Nearly three months later, Gallichan “threatened to share intimate photographs of the victim on social media”, the prosecutor said.
The court also heard that he had turned up at the home of one of the victim’s family members, “screaming and shouting” outside. He then went to the victim’s car, slamming the door shut with such force that the internal door handle came off.
“The victim had tears rolling down her face and was shaking,” Advocate Carvalho said.
Gallichan also threatened to “do [the victim] in” if his dinner was not prepared on time.
“I have never seen anything like it when is angry, you can see the anger, his eyes look like they could kill someone, his face is bright red and his hands go tense,” the victim recalled of the incident.
The prosecutor outlined several threats made by Gallichan in subsequent weeks to destroy the victim’s furniture.
“TV is already f***** and so is your projector, the microwave will be next. You’re getting it, swear to f***. You have two minutes or I’m coming to find you and when I do you’re not going to like what I do,” he said.
In a personal statement read out in court, the complainant described being “consumed by fear, anxiety and emotional trauma” as a result of Gallichan’s actions.
She said he left her feeling “in survival mode”, adding: “There have been countless nights where I’ve been unable to sleep as my mind races constantly with anxiety and fear.”
Advocate Ian Jones, defending, said his client had “sorted his life out” since the offending period and implored the court to hand down a non-custodial sentence.
“This isn’t a man who doesn’t have a job, this isn’t a man who has been engaging in anti-social activity, who has been committing minor offences,” he said. “This is a young man who has done everything that the court and the learned Jurats would expect him to do in the situation he is in.”
Delivering the court’s sentence, Bailiff Robert MacRae, presiding, described Gallichan’s offending as “appalling” and said the “custody threshold is not only met but exceeded to the extend that we feel we have no the option but to opt for a sentence of immediate imprisonment.”
He also ordered for a domestic abuse order to put in place for five years, and made the defendant subject to notification requirements for the same time period.
