DFDS has confirmed that it has abandoned plans to operate inter-island sailings this summer and will instead provide additional services between Jersey and St Malo.

The ferry operator’s decision follows the decision by Guernsey’s Committee for Economic Development not to approve the company’s proposal for Friday and Monday inter-island services.

Services between Jersey and Guernsey that had been scheduled for the coming months have been withdrawn from sale, with affected customers contacted directly and offered refunds.

Responding to a query from the JEP, DFDS said it remained open to further discussions regarding future inter-island connectivity and continued to believe there was value in improving links between the islands. The company added that it would welcome further engagement involving both island governments, ports and other relevant officials.

DFDS will add further St Malo sailings on a number of the dates originally earmarked for inter-island services, saying that this represented increased capacity and flexibility on the French route.

The additional dates are 6 and 20 July, together with 3, 17 and 24 August, while another extra St Malo sailing has been scheduled for Thursday 2 July to allow more Islanders to attend the 24-hour motorsport event in Le Mans.

Full report to follow.
