A DRUG dealer who let police officers into his home despite being in possession of £30,000 worth of drugs has been jailed for seven years by the Royal Court.

Hugo Miguel Dos Santos (28) made full admissions straight away, telling police officers he was a runner for a drug dealer and that he was trying to pay back a debt around £30,000 to £40,000, which he said he had accumulated when robbed of drugs he was selling.

He admitted to one count of possession of cocaine with intent to supply, one of possession of MDMA with intent to supply, one of possession of herbal cannabis, and one of being in possession of the proceeds of crime.

Crown Advocate Lauren Taylor, prosecuting, said Dos Santos thought the amount of drugs would clear his debt once he had sold it all.

The court heard that officers found drugs hidden all over his home including in bags, drawers, tubs and pots. The total amount of MDMA powder had a street value between £3,280 and £4,100, while 34 MDMA tablets would have been worth between £510 and £850.

The cocaine had a street value between £23,550 and £31,400. Dos Santos said in interview that he sold it for £180 a gram, making it worth £28,260. Officers also found £3,370 in cash, which made up the money-laundering charge.

Advocate Allana Binnie, defending, said Dos Santos had serious mental health issues and a very difficult upbringing. He had been targeted due to his vulnerability, she said.

She added that he went “over and above in terms of cooperation” by giving police officers more information than requested.

He had a “significant mental health background”, the court was told, while a psychiatrist’s report found that he had schizoaffective disorder. It was also heard that Dos Santos had not been taking his medication in an attempt to prove his strength, and had been self-medicating using drugs.

Dos Santos “should be regarded as a vulnerable man with a serious disorder with entrenched substance misuse difficulties,” she said.

She added that for the first time he accepts treatment recommendations, both for his time in prison and after he is released.

In character references, he was referred to as “kind, caring and hardworking”, she said. “He quite clearly has support from those who care about him.”

Dos Santos was jailed for a total of seven years.

Detective Sergeant Alasdair Castle said: “The Drug Squad are committed to putting those
responsible for supplying hard drugs before the courts to protect our community from the
serious harm they can cause.”

Deputy Bailiff Mark Temple was presiding with Jurats Ronge, Le Heuzé, Opfermann, Berry and Powell sitting.
