A WORKING smoke alarm has been credited with helping three Islanders escape safely after a tumble dryer fire broke out in the basement of a St Helier property on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the house following a 999 call shortly after 6pm.

When firefighters arrived, the three occupants had already evacuated after being alerted by the smoke alarm.

The fire, which was located in the property’s basement, had initially been tackled by one of the residents before crews arrived, Jersey Fire and Rescue said.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze before using ventilation equipment to clear smoke from the basement and a neighbouring property above, which had also been affected.

All three occupants were taken to hospital by paramedics as a precaution due to possible smoke inhalation.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said the fire is believed to have started within the electrical components of a tumble dryer that was in use at the time.

Following the blaze, watch commander Richard Ryan urged Islanders not to attempt to tackle fires themselves.

“Fires can develop rapidly, and smoke can become life-threatening within minutes,” he said.

“If a fire occurs, leave the property immediately, ensure everyone is accounted for, close doors where possible on your way out to help contain the fire, and call the emergency services.”
