Staff and skills shortages remain biggest constraints for businesses, survey finds

STAFF and skills shortages remain prominent issues for businesses despite efforts to hire new workers or upskill existing employees, according to data collected by Statistics Jersey.
The latest snapshot of constraints within the Island’s economy has been published following the June 2026 Business Tendency Survey, which saw over 500 businesses sampled with a response rate of 55%.
The respondents account for 34% of private sector employment.
The study, which tracks how business conditions are changing over time, included questions about the factors limiting business activity and the actions being taken to address them.
Staff and skills shortages were cited as the most reported limiting factor (50%) in the June survey – unchanged from the last quarter.
This was followed by lack of demand (28%) and regulation (25%).
The main reported actions to address limiting factors were hiring more staff or upskilling (47%), adjusting pricing or service offerings (42%) and reducing operational costs (35%).
Jersey Chamber of Commerce interim president Eliot Lincoln said: “It is encouraging that so many employers are trying to recruit and upskill their teams, but the fact that staff and skills shortages remain the biggest constraint underlines just how challenging the labour market continues to be.
“Businesses are doing their part, but without long term workforce planning and a stronger skills pipeline, growth will continue to be held back.”
