New large retail outlet opens in St John – offering an alternative to a trip to town

A NEW large store in the north of the Island opens its doors on Saturday, described as a Jersey version of Costco, The Range and Home Bargains combined.
The Outlet has been created by local retailer Clive Broadhead and is in the former Carpetright building at St John’s Retail Park, between La Casa and St John’s Sofa Warehouse.
More than a year in the planning, the 12,000sq-ft store is selling a variety of goods, including homeware, kitchenware, electricals, fashion, garden and camping equipment, pet goods, toys, bikes, beauty products, season goods and luggage.
However, The Outlet – painted bright blue externally – is also selling chilled, frozen and ambient food, including sandwiches, drinks and snacks.
Mr Broadhead, who now owns all the stores at the retail park, said he had come up with the idea for The Outlet while visiting shops in Portsmouth.
He said: “Carpetright was leaving and I was thinking about how I might be able to use the vacant space positively. Looking at stores in the UK, such as Costco, The Range and Home Bargains, it was clear to me that Jersey needed a mix of these, which is what we have set out to create.”
Mr Broadhead said that he was using several suppliers and “the sky was the limit” in terms of what products The Outlet might offer.
“If this is supported by the community, which I’m sure it will be, we will take it as far as we can – making it bigger and expanding the ranges, including food,” he said. “Also, during the election we obviously heard a lot about the possibility of a discount supermarket like Aldi or Lidl coming to Jersey.
“Well, I’d happily take that forward if anyone has a contact in those businesses and can put me in touch.”
Mr Broadhead added that he would be absorbing shipping costs to keep prices on the shelves as competitive as possible, but they would come down further if Islanders exercised their own buying power in the store.
He said: “We obviously have the St John roadworks at the moment which have caused a lot of problems for some businesses in the area; however, I see it as a positive, which is why we are launching this weekend.
“There are thousands of households in the north of the Island who now don’t need to go into town for a wide range of goods, from speakers and bedding, to toys and beach umbrellas. It’s all here.”
Mr Broadhead said that next year would mark his 40th anniversary as a retailer in the Island, which including owning the Furnishing Centre in Victoria Street for many years.
With La Casa and St John’s Sofa Warehouse next door, he expects that St John’s Retail Park – still referred to by those of a certain vintage as ‘the old B&Q’ – will go from strength to strength.
He said: “We open on Saturday 9 am – 5 pm, initially opening six days a week. However, in a couple of weeks, we plan to be open seven days a week, 8am until 8pm.
“I think Islanders will be impressed by what we have created.”
One of the inspirations behind The Outlet – the UK-based The Range – did try to open a store further down St John’s Main Road at the Motor Mall in 2021. However, the chain – founded by then-Jersey resident Chris Dawson – abandoned its plans after failing to secure planning permission.
