THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 Dominates Global Box Office as MICHAEL Surges and MORTAL KOMBAT II Stumbles Out of the Gate

by · GeekTyrant

The box office this weekend delivered a mix of fashion-fueled success, music-driven momentum, and a slightly underwhelming return to a beloved video game franchise.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is still ruling theaters worldwide, while Michael continues its climb toward biopic history. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat II didn’t quite hit as hard as expected in its debut.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 isn’t slowing down. The long-awaited sequel has now pulled in an impressive $433 million globally after just two weekends. That’s already past the total earnings of the original 2006 film, which finished its run with $326 million worldwide.

The film reunites Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, and audiences clearly wanted more of that sharp, stylish chaos. This weekend alone added $75 million internationally and $43 million domestically.

North America has contributed $144 million so far, while international markets are doing heavy lifting with $288 million across 51 territories. The United Kingdom and Italy are tied at $28 million each, followed by Brazil with $22 million and Mexico with $20 million. It’s a global fashion takeover, plain and simple.

Over in the music world, Michael is proving to be a serious contender. The Michael Jackson biopic brought in $58.5 million overseas in its third weekend, dropping just 32% from the previous frame. That’s a strong hold, and it pushes the film to $336 million internationally and $577 million worldwide.

With that kind of trajectory, Michael is eyeing the music biopic crown currently held by Bohemian Rhapsody, which topped out at $910 million globally. Whether it gets there or not, the $155 million production is already a massive win and shows no signs of fading anytime soon.

Then there’s Mortal Kombat II, which had a decent but softer-than-hoped-for launch. The Warner Bros. sequel opened with $23 million overseas across 78 markets and added $40 million domestically, bringing its global debut to $63 million. For a franchise with such a dedicated fanbase, expectations were a bit higher.

That said, comparisons to 2021’s Mortal Kombat are tricky. That film dropped during a time when theaters were still recovering and also hit HBO Max on the same day. Even so, it managed $84 million worldwide. This new entry, made for $80 million, still has time to build momentum. There’s also a third film already in development.

Elsewhere, Sheep Detective is quietly building its case with audiences. The Hugh Jackman-led mystery comedy brought in $12.1 million internationally and has reached $28 million globally. With strong reviews and positive audience reactions, it could stick around longer than expected, which it’ll need to do given its $75 million budget.

Rounding things out, Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) made a solid entrance. Directed by James Cameron and Billie Eilish, the concert film earned $12.6 million overseas and $7.5 million domestically, totaling $20 million worldwide. Considering its $20 million budget, it’s off to a respectable start and should continue to draw fans eager for a big-screen concert experience.

All in all, it’s a weekend where legacy sequels and music-driven stories are leading the charge, even if not every fighter lands a flawless victory.
