Tackle rising aviation fuel costs, save airlines from collapse – Reps tells Nigerian govt
by Roseline Nwosu · Daily PostThe House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the rising cost of aviation fuel, warning that the situation is putting pressure on the country’s aviation sector.
The resolution was reached on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, during plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Leading the motion, a member of the House, Abdullahi Idris Garba, expressed concern over the continuous increase in the price of Jet A1 fuel, noting that it has significantly affected airline operations and ticket prices across the country.
Mr Garba said, “The persistent rise in aviation fuel costs is crippling the aviation industry and making air travel increasingly unaffordable for Nigerians.”
He urged the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and other relevant agencies, to introduce measures that would stabilise fuel prices and support local airlines.
The lawmaker further warned that if urgent steps are not taken, more airlines may be forced to cut down operations or shut down completely due to the high cost of running flights.
