Awolowo, Jakande gave us free education, never saw it as achievement — Laide Olabanji

Nollywood actor, Laide Olabanji has criticised the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, arguing that past leaders such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Lateef Jakande provided free education without presenting it as a major achievement.

Olabanji stated this in a video shared on social media while reflecting on the state of education in Nigeria. 

The actor, who spoke in Yoruba, compared the current student loan policy with the free education programmes associated with Awolowo and Jakande, questioning why access to education should require students to take on financial obligations.

According to Olabanji, the late elder statesmen introduced free education initiatives that enabled many Nigerians to access quality schooling without financial burdens.

 “Awolowo and Lateef Jakande gave us free education and never saw it as an achievement, but you guys have created student loan and now see it as an achievement,” Olabanji said.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions over the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, which was introduced to provide financial assistance to students seeking higher education. 

Olabanji’s remarks have sparked reactions online, particularly around the cost of tertiary education and whether student loans represent an effective solution to the challenges facing students and their families.
