AFCON 2027Q: Awoniyi replaces Osimhen in Super Eagles’ squad for Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau

Taiwo Awoniyi has replaced injured Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, confirmed Osimhen, who is currently recovering from a muscle strain will miss the qualifiers on Saturday.

Head coach Éric Chelle has now called up Awoniyi as a late replacement for the Galatasaray striker.

“Coventry City striker, Taiwo Awoniyi replaces Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.Welcome back, Taiwo,” reads a short message on the Super Eagles X account.

The Super Eagles are expected to open camp in Uyo for the games on Monday.

Nigeria will take host Madagascar at home next week Thursday, before travelling to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, 29 September.
