PS Plus Essential is getting more expensive for new customers this week

by · tsa

Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus is going to get more expensive this week on 20th May, affecting the price of a 1-month and 3-month subscription.

The new prices will see a 1-month subscription now cost $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP, while a 3-month sub is $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP.

This is only for new subscribers, so will not apply if you are on a 1-month or 3-month rolling sub at the moment, unless you let it lapse. The exception is that Turkey and India will be affected by regional price hikes regardless.

Sony has broken out the classic “ongoing market conditions” to justify a bump in prices, so I guess we can count our lucky stars that PS Plus isn’t getting pricier across the board… for now. Additionally, it seems that only PS Plus Essential is affected.

The last PS Plus price hikes came in late 2023, which saw a 20% jump in the UK, 26% jump in the EU and a staggering 33% rise for the US across the various 12-month subscriptions. Again, those are not affected at this time.

The way to avoid being hit is to shop around as much as you can and go for the 12-month subscriptions, which are £60 instead of £96 when paying monthly or £88 quarterly. There’s yet more reason to look out for PS Plus subscriptions when they are included in rare promotional discounts. You can often get 30% off a PS Plus subscription around Black Friday, the New Year and late spring/early summer. Which is all well and good if you can drop a decent chunk of money on a subscription in one go. That won’t be possible for less well-off gamers, which doesn’t half make this feel like Sony are picking on the poorest out there, whether by design or as a by product.
