This is uncharted waters for Nintendo, but it’s in keeping with the trends and difficulties that all electronics manufacturers have been feeling over the past year in particular. Sony and Microsoft have repeatedly raised the prices of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles through this generation, but with the AI bubble has led to massive purchases of RAM and general chip manufacturing capacity by AI companies. This has affected all other computing products, with companies able to cushion the blow to varying degrees. Even Apple is now starting to feel the pressure, with the lowest priced Mac Mini model removed from sale and rumours that the entry level MacBook Neo might see a similar approach.
For Nintendo, the company has sought to insulate its market in Japan by producing a region locked Nintendo Switch 2 and selling it at a lower price, countering the impact of the local economy. We’re now seeing them have to roll back some of this, presumably as they would be making too much of a loss on consoles sold.
That they’re able to hold the pricing in the rest of the world until September indicates that they have existing deals and supply to produce consoles at the current price point, but it’s not like we haven’t already seen the company try to increase margins elsewhere, raising the price of games for this generation – given how unpopular this was last year, they’ve now split pricing on digital and physical, to make digital games $10 cheaper than carts.
