BBC Strictly Come Dancing's Nick Knowles gives injury update as motorway incident could stop performance

by · Manchester Evening News

Nick Knowles is still hoping to perform this weekend after an injury has left his Strictly Come Dancing in doubt. The DIY SOS star has been seen with his arm in a sling after being left in pain following an incident by the side of a motorway.

Nick was celebrating his 62nd birthday a day late on Sunday (September 22) after opening the first live show of the BBC One dance contest on his actual birthday on Saturday night (September 21) alongside his dance partner Luba.

But as he picked up his young son to take him to the celebrations, Nick's car broke down over the weekend at the side of a motorway. With his 10-year-old in the car, Nick endeavoured to change the tyre as quickly as possible for both of their safety, however, he ended up picking up a niggle in his shoulder.

The pain progressively got worse and Nick has since had scans to check the damage and is also being assessed in the training room by a physio to see if it will be possible for him to perform in week two of Strictly on Saturday night (September 28).

In his most recent update on Wednesday evening (September 25), the TV star spoke directly to his online following in a video in which he could be seen without a sling.

He admitted his shoulder is "repairing very well", and following a successful training session, he revealed a decision will be made on Thursday afternoon (September 26) about his potential weekend performance.

Speaking in a video posted to his X and Instagram accounts, he said: "So a bit of an update for you. I've just got out of soaking in the bath after a day's training, which went very, very well. The shoulder is repairing very well. I saw a great physio today as well that's helped enormously.

"So, I get another day's training tomorrow. The decision will be made tomorrow afternoon, whether I can actually compete on Saturday. I'm doing my level best to get there - keeping my fingers crossed. So, hopefully see you Saturday."

Nick gave a positive update on how his shoulder is healing

Alongside the post, Nick wrote: "A day of training done. Let’s see what tomorrow brings. Thanks again for all your support and well wishes @bbcstrictly #strictly," in response to which he received more love and support.

Nick is said to have been "pleading" with show bosses to let him perform on the programme this weekend. A source told The Sun newspaper: "Nick is desperate to carry on and is insisting he is fine to perform but the BBC are naturally wary.

"If Nick continues and does more damage to himself in the long run it puts them in a tricky position. His health comes first but Nick is pleading with them to continue."

However, the pair won't have much time to perfect their routine if they are cleared to perform. A source said: "Nick needs to learn a whole routine, he has barely any time at all. If he is cleared he will need to learn quickly. Luba is an amazing teacher and she is confident they can do it. But, ultimately, it might get to a point that the BBC just put their foot down."
