It almost feels like a cliché to say, but times are tough for a lot of people.
With the cost of living continuing to rise as the Iran War rumbles on, many households are feeling the pressure on their finances. Everyday essentials, from groceries to energy bills, seem to cost more than they did just a short time ago, leaving less room for those little, non-essential things to brighten your day.
Making small, consistent changes can have a noticeable impact over time. Whether it's cutting back on impulse purchases, switching to more affordable brands or planning meals in advance, there are ways to make getting through to the next pay day that little bit easier.
For many, the biggest outgoings of the month are fixed. In February, MoneySuperMarket’s Household Money Index revealed that the average UK household spends over £1,400 a month on essential bills, with a daily spend of £48.50.
The website has a handy 'Home Bills Healthcheck' tool, which shows you the average prices for car and home insurance in your area for people in a similar position to you.
The tool can help you to find out whether you might be paying more than you need to for your bills, and if there is any wiggle room for you to get that essential bill total down come the end of the month.
MoneySuperMarket's number crunchers have looked at all the data and worked out how much the average homeowner could be saving if they use the price comparison website to find the perfect deal for them, as of March 2026.
