Dear Anash, residents of Crown Heights – כאן צוה ה’ את הברכה

Greetings and Blessings:

First, we wish to salute you, residents of the sh’chuna, who fulfill the mitzvah of Hachnosas Orchim personally, with your homes and with your money, in a manner that has no equal anywhere in the world – reminiscent of Yerushalayim in the days of the Beis HaMikdash!

As every year, chickens for Kaporos will be sold this Motzaei Shabbos on the corner of Kingston Ave. and President St. As is known, the chickens are shechted and kashered and go straight to the kitchens of Hachnosas Orchim – to the tables of “the Rebbe’s guests.”

All proceeds are dedicated to Eshel – Hachnosas Orchim, which was founded upon the directive of the Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach and merited special notice and encouragement from the Rebbe throughout the years. Each year, Eshel provides hospitality to many thousands of Anash and T’mimim who come to 770 for the month of Tishrei, at a cost estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A word about the price
This year, as you know, Kaporos are being offered in the neighborhood at subsidized prices, and some are even giving them away free of charge. We understand the situation, and we did everything we could to lower our price. But we want you to know: chickens cost money, and so do the shechitah and the kashering.

And still, we turn to you – resident of the sh’chuna, and guest who have come for Tishrei: buy your Kaporos from us. Not because of the price – despite the price. Why?

1. The zechus of partnership: Buying your Kaporos at Eshel is direct support for the chesed institution which the Rebbe encouraged and blessed all who contribute to Eshel with rare brachos. If you are a resident of the sh’chuna – this is your opportunity to be a partner and to receive the Rebbe’s brachos.

2. Mitzvos are paid for: Our Sages taught that there is a special quality to a mitzvah a person pays for from his own pocket. The Zohar writes that one who wishes to engage in a mitzvah “must not do so emptily and for free,” but “for full payment.” Of the Arizal, his disciple Rabbi Chaim Vital testifies that when he bought tefillin or an esrog, he never bargained at all. The Shelah writes: “Any mitzvah one acquires at a high price is superior.” And the Mateh Efraim writes regarding the Yomim Noraim: “There is a greater elevation in a mitzvah that comes to a person for money than in one that comes to him free of charge.”

3. And with Kaporos – all the more so: As is known, “there is no kaparah except through the money given to the poor.” Therefore, even one who bought the chicken gives “pidyon kaporos” to tzedakah. When you buy your Kaporos at Eshel – the chicken itself goes to the guests, and the payment, too, is dedicated to Eshel.

Despite all of the above, we tried very hard to take the situation into account, and after all our efforts we have brought the price down to $12 per chicken.

We thank you in advance, and are certain that the merit of assisting Hachnosas Orchim, which provides for “the Rebbe’s guests,” will stand for all of us for a g’mar chasima tova, a good and sweet year with bonei, chayei u’mezonei revichei, and above all – a year of Geulah with the revelation of the Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach now!
