KUCHING (Oct 26): The RM50.25 million spun pile and pole factory in Tanjong Manis is expected to create jobs, expand opportunities for local businesses.

Caretaker Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said this would also strengthen Sarawak’s industrial supply chain.

This was pointed out at the ground-breaking ceremony for the project in Tanjong Manis yesterday.

Awang Tengah, also Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) chairman, also pointed out the investment as reflecting the confidence in Sarawak’s economic potential, and also supporting the efforts to strengthen the manufacturing sector and expand downstream industries.

“The success of an investment should not be measured by its value or production capacity alone, but also by its ability to create economic value, employment and business opportunities for local companies,” he said.

Developed by PMW Winabumi (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd on a 29-acre site at the Rejang River, the factory will manufacture pre-stressed concrete products for the construction, infrastructure and utilities sectors.

It is designed to produce 10,683 tonnes of spun piles and poles monthly, with operations targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of next year, and full production expected by early 2028.

Awang Tengah said the project could create around 160 direct jobs, with priority given to the surrounding communities.

“More than 50 per cent of materials are also targeted to be sourced locally, creating potential opportunities for Sarawakian suppliers, contractors and supporting businesses,” he added, also pointing out Tanjung Manis as having strong potential for further development as an industrial and economic centre supporting Central Sarawak.

Moreover, he said Sarawak recorded RM11.2 billion in approved investments across the primary, manufacturing and services sectors in the first half of this year, with domestic investments accounting for 61 per cent.

Meanwhile, STIDC general manager Datu Zainal Abidin Abdullah said the factory would strengthen Tanjung Manis’ manufacturing capabilities while creating opportunities for local businesses to participate in the industrial supply chain.

PMW International Berhad executive director and chief executive officer Lee Hon Hwa added in by saying that the collaboration with STIDC would bring the company’s expertise in integrated concrete products, including moulds, machinery and plant design, to Sarawak.
