135 Permyjaya households to get piped gas under Petros’ second phase QTC project, says Premier
by Jude Toyat · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Oct 31): A total of 135 households in Permyjaya, Miri are set to benefit from the second phase of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad’s (Petros) Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) project, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Premier said the second phase scheduled for completion by 2025 will provide safe, reliable, and affordable piped gas to the lower-income households.
He said the first phase of the multi-phase infrastructure project was successfully completed in February, benefiting 13 lower-income households in QTC.
“I am also pleased to inform that Petros shall cover all installation costs for the necessary gas pipelines to deliver piped gas directly to your kitchen. Syabas and well done to Petros’ team.
“That is our ambition, that it is not only in Permyjaya and perhaps throughout Sarawak, you don’t have to carry the tank anymore, but it’s piped to your houses,” he said at Petros’ seventh anniversary dinner last night.
Abang Johari said once fully implemented, the QTC project will benefit more than 3,000 households in Permyjaya overall.
He pointed out that effective Feb 1 this year, Petros is authorised to manage the procurement and distribution of all natural gas produced in Sarawak.
This strategic role empowers Sarawak to safeguard energy supply and promote further industrial growth through the development of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, he said.
“This activity is within the ambit of Sarawak’s law after the Oil Mining Ordinance, gas distribution under the law is under the jurisdiction of Sarawak. Of course, we will collaborate with the players as far as gas upstream and downstream activities.”
He said under the roadmap, Petros is enhancing statewide gas accessibility via four strategic hubs in Miri, Bintulu, Samalaju, and Kuching.
He explained that these strategic gas hubs will serve as central distribution points within a ‘Hub-and-Spoke’ delivery model, to all parts of Sarawak, including the hinterland areas, enhancing access to affordable gas for the people.
“This journey of progress has always been about unlocking new industrial investment opportunities across the state to build a foundation for long-term economic sustainability.
“By managing our resources through Petros, we can take charge of our future, ensuring that the benefits received from Sarawak’s resources reach the people of Sarawak directly,” he said.
Abang Johari pointed out Petros completed a landmark project providing 115 traders at Medan Saberkas with reliable and affordable piped natural gas last year.
As the gas aggregator, the Premier said Petros is entrusted to invest in the development, expansion, management and maintenance of critical gas and energy infrastructure throughout Sarawak.
“The progress we have made in Miri is just the beginning of our footprint, that is the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, and more will come.
“Looking ahead, Petros is making significant investments to fuel Sarawak’s energy future. This includes a RM100 million investment in the Gas to Bintulu project aimed at providing natural gas access to Bintulu, alongside a RM1 billion commitment to the Samalaju Pipeline project.
“As I speak, pipe materials are being manufactured, with the installation of this offshore pipeline on track for completion by November 2025,” he added.
