Sarawak’s 12th PPS opens in Lawas for Kpg Siang-Siang flood victims
by Galileo Petingi · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Jan 2): Sarawak now has 12 active temporary evacuation centres (PPS) following recent floods, with the latest opened this afternoon in Lawas at SJK (C) Chung Hua Trusan.
The additional PPS is sheltering 77 victims from 21 households from Kampung Siang-Siang.
Another PPS in Lawas is at Dewan Masyarakat Trusan, which is sheltering 89 victims from 23 households.
With the additional PPS, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reported a total of 1,270 disaster victims from 326 households statewide.
“In Kuching, the number of evacuees now reduced to 1,077 victims from 273 households at eight PPS; as the evacuees at Dewan Masyarakat Stapok and Surau Ar-Rahman are returning to their homes. However, there is a slight increase in the number of evacuees at Masjid Darul Istiqlaal (92 victims from 21 households)
“In Samarahan, the number remains at 23 victims from eight households.
“In Miri, the number of displaced individuals due to a landslide remained at four victims from one household,” SDMC said in an update.
In Kuching, areas affected by the flood include Taman Desa Wira, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kampung Sungai Batu, Kampung Surih Iban, Taman Malihah, Kampung Sejijak, Kampung Tengah Sungai, Kampung Rantau Panjang and Kampung Sungai Maong.
Aside from Darul Istiqlaal Mosque, other PPS opened in Kuching are the Stapok Community Hall, R Piang Hall at Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Surau Ar-Rahman at Kampung Sungai Batu, Surau Nurul Najhin Hall in Stapok, Taman Malihah Multipurpose Hall, SJK Sungai Tengah, and SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa.
In Samarahan, Kampung Plaie was affected by floods, with evacuees housed at Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan.
In Miri, the PPS at the Red Crescent Hall was activated to accommodate landslide victims from Kampung Lusut Jaya, with the situation reported to be under control.
