UK and Florida launch new space partnership

The UK and the US state of Florida have announced a new space partnership designed to accelerate innovation in the space sector, creating fresh opportunities for businesses, researchers and technology developers on both sides of the Atlantic

The agreement, signed during the Farnborough International Airshow, establishes a joint £300,000 funding programme that will support collaborative projects with strong commercial potential. Backed by the UK Space Agency’s International Bilateral Fund and Space Florida’s International Aerospace Innovation Fund, the initiative aims to help promising ideas move beyond the research stage and towards real-world applications.

Rather than focusing solely on early-stage research, the fund is intended to bridge the gap between innovation and commercialisation, enabling organisations to develop and demonstrate new technologies while improving access to investment and international markets.

Building stronger international partnerships

The new space partnership reflects the UK’s growing emphasis on international collaboration as a way of strengthening its space industry and expanding global opportunities for British organisations.

By encouraging joint projects between UK-based and Florida-based partners, the programme will allow companies and research institutions to combine expertise, share specialist facilities and develop technologies that could be difficult to achieve independently. The collaboration is also expected to strengthen commercial links with one of the world’s most active and well-established space ecosystems.

Florida is already recognised as a major global hub for the space industry, home to the world’s busiest spaceport and an extensive aerospace network that includes launch providers, manufacturers, research organisations and technology companies.

For the UK, whose space sector contributes £18.6 billion to the economy and supports more than 55,000 jobs, the partnership offers another route to showcase British innovation while opening doors to the important US market.

Focus on next-generation space technologies

The funding programme will prioritise projects in areas where cooperation between the UK and Florida is expected to deliver the greatest impact.

These include space transportation, satellite technologies, in-space research, advanced exploration systems, as well as in-orbit servicing and manufacturing. Many of these technologies are expected to play a vital role in the future of commercial spaceflight, satellite operations, and deep space exploration.

Supporting projects with clear commercial potential is a key objective, ensuring that successful research has a realistic pathway towards becoming viable products and services that can benefit both economies.

Applications open later this year

A formal call for project proposals is scheduled to open during Autumn 2026, with successful applications expected to be selected in 2027.

To qualify, projects must include at least one UK-based organisation working alongside at least one partner based in Florida. Applicants will also need to demonstrate that their proposals have strong prospects for commercialisation and wider economic impact.

The initiative builds on the Memorandum of Understanding on trade agreed between the UK and Florida in November 2023, which identified space as a priority area for closer cooperation.

With both regions investing heavily in space technology, infrastructure and innovation, the new funding programme represents another step towards creating long-term partnerships that can accelerate technological development, attract investment and strengthen the international competitiveness of both space sectors.
