EU LIFE programme supports Europe’s push for innovation and resilience
by Harriet Belderbos · Open Access GovernmentA new publication of the EU’s LIFE Programme was released on 6 May 2026. The new publication shows how LIFE-funded projects are helping turn environmental and climate ambitions into practical economic opportunities across the continent
With sustainability increasingly linked to economic security, the LIFE programme is supporting innovations that improve industrial competitiveness, reduce dependence on imported resources and help communities adapt to climate challenges.
Turning innovation into real-world solutions
The publication, LIFE and the EU’s Competitiveness Agenda: Fostering Innovation, Strategic Autonomy, and Resilience for Sustainable Growth, highlights projects across Europe that are already delivering measurable results.
Rather than focusing solely on research, the LIFE programme supports the deployment and scaling-up of market-ready technologies and sustainable business models.
Projects highlighted in the report demonstrate how environmental initiatives can also create economic value. In Finland, circular economy solutions are helping reduce waste and improve resource efficiency, while in Italy, zero-emission mobility projects are supporting cleaner transport systems and new industrial opportunities.
The programme is also helping attract both public and private investment into clean technologies and sustainable infrastructure.
Supporting Europe’s competitiveness agenda
The LIFE Programme plays a big role in supporting the European Union’s Competitiveness Compass, which focuses on innovation, strategic autonomy and resilience.
With a budget of €5.4 billion for the 2021–2027 period and more than €4 billion already mobilised since 2014, LIFE acts as a catalyst for investment in sustainable growth.
By helping promising technologies reach the market, the programme contributes to decarbonisation while strengthening European industries.
One major focus is on reducing Europe’s reliance on imported fossil fuels and raw materials. Projects funded through LIFE are helping develop domestic solutions that improve energy security and strengthen supply chains.
Clean technology and circular economy projects
Several projects featured in the publication showed how innovation can support both environmental and economic goals.
DeliverEEM is working to expand energy-efficient mortgage markets across Europe, encouraging private investment in building renovation and energy-saving improvements. The initiative aims to make energy-efficient housing more accessible while supporting the construction and finance sectors.
PlastLIFE is focused on advancing circular plastics solutions to reduce dependence on fossil-based materials by improving recycling and promoting sustainable alternatives.
Industrial innovation is another key area. EXQUISHEAT promotes the use of industrial heat pumps to reduce fossil fuel use in manufacturing processes, while LIFE-SYNFLUOR transforms industrial waste into critical raw materials that can be reused within European supply chains.
These projects not only support climate targets but also help create new business opportunities and strengthen Europe’s industrial base.
Alongside innovation and industrial competitiveness, the LIFE programme also supports projects that improve climate resilience and protect natural resources.
LIFE TreeCheck is helping cities strengthen urban resilience through green infrastructure, while LIFE Olivares Vivos + demonstrates how biodiversity-friendly farming can improve agricultural productivity and long-term competitiveness.
By supporting cleaner technologies, resource efficiency and climate adaptation, the LIFE Programme is helping Europe build a more resilient and sustainable economy.
