Martha Plimpton Slams Shane Gillis’ ‘Really F—g Stupid’ ‘SNL’ Monologue: ‘He Deserves a Spanking From His Mom’
by Payton Turkeltaub · VarietyMartha Plimpton has joined the list of stars speaking out over Shane Gillis’ poorly received “Saturday Night Live” opening monologue.
“There’s this Shane Gillis guy who I’ve never heard of who said some really fucking stupid shit on live on air on ‘SNL’ on Saturday,” the “Goonies” star said in a video posted to her Instagram. “It’s like really stupid shit. He deserves a spanking from his mom.”

Plimpton also spoke about watching a documentary about Lore Michaels, who created and executive produced the sketch comedy show. “There was one scene that took place in Lorne’s office where in between the rehearsal taping and the live show, a bunch of people gather in Lorne’s office to decide what’s gonna get cut and what’s gonna make it to air. It was all white men in the room deciding. All white men. And maybe even all straight white men,” she said. “I think Lorne needs some more women in that room making decisions. Don’t you? Yeah, I think so.” She continued to shout out her love of ‘SNL’ mainstay Kenan Thompson, who commented on the video. “Shane Who?” her caption read.
Gillis sparked outrage over his misogynistic opening monologue nearly immediately after he took the stage on Saturday night. The bulk of the criticism he’s faced is the result of a joke about women’s workout clothes. “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now?” he said. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. You’ve seen the shorts? They’re those neon, like, artificial bait-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look.”
Dan Levy shared an Instagram Reel on Sunday reacting to the monologue in disbelief. “Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists,” he said. “There’s a difference there. By the way, I’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym than I’ve ever seen women showing their bodies off.”
