“Maybe it’s not a Gen Z problem”- M’sian Fresh Grad Criticised For Lack of Experience During Job Interview
by Didi · WORLD OF BUZZA recent Threads post has gone viral after a woman shared her experience interviewing for a job at a company, which she said left her feeling “less confident.”
Jane (pseudonym) said she went through an almost one-hour interview, only to be criticised for not having enough work experience despite the company knowing she was a fresh graduate.
Malaysian undergraduate criticised for lack of experience during job interview
Jane, who later left a one-star Google review for the company, described the interview as feeling “more like an interrogation than a conversation”.
She recalled being constantly interrupted while answering questions and rarely being given the chance to finish her thoughts.
She also alleged that she was criticised for “not having enough experience”, despite explaining that her internship provided relevant experience.
“I even set my salary expectation at the lowest possible range. When I said I was willing to learn, I was told, ‘This is not a college, this is a workplace,’ which felt dismissive when I was simply being honest about being early in my career,” she wrote.
She also claimed that the company repeatedly brought up having “trust issues” with Gen Z employees due to past experiences with staff who allegedly had a “bad attitude”, which she felt was unfairly applied to her during the interview.
“I feel so disrespected. I acknowledged that you (the company) have trust issues with Gen Z, but I came with good intentions. I felt so disrespected after that one-hour-long interview. They said Gen Z was the problem, but somehow, I was the one they had trust issues with.
“They said a lot of Gen Z employees had resigned. Maybe it’s not a Gen Z problem. Maybe it’s a problem with your company,” she added.
“I felt like my time and effort were not valued”
After the interview, Jane said she did not receive any follow-up from the company for almost three weeks, despite reaching out herself. This left her feeling that her “time and effort were not valued at any stage of the process.”
“I ended up feeling less confident in myself after the interview. They kept interrupting me whenever I tried to answer. I got home from work at 2am the night before and spent hours practising for the interview,” she said.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Jane also encouraged job hunters and fresh graduates not to let a bad interview experience discourage them.
“Always trust your gut. If something about the interview or the way you were treated doesn’t feel right, take it as a sign to pause and reconsider whether the company is truly the right place for you.
“Sometimes, a bad experience can save you from a bigger one in the future. The right opportunity will come at the right time.”
