Garda watchdog investigating death of man in custody

Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, has confirmed that it is investigating the death of a man in garda custody yesterday evening.

Gardaí said the man in his 30s became unresponsive in a cell at a Dublin garda station.

Resuscitation attempts were made by garda members and later by medical personnel and first responders.

The man was later pronounced dead. Gardaí said that the coroner has been notified.

In a statement, Fiosrú said that as per garda policy it received a referral from An Garda Síochána.

It said its on call team of investigators attended the scene.

As the matter is now under investigation, Fiosrú said it cannot make any further comment.
