A plan to revive town centres by turning empty shopfronts into new local businesses is being proposed by Minister of State for Retail Alan Dillon.

Local authorities, regeneration officers, and Local Enterprise Offices will be asked to match vacant premises with the needs of the community as part of an initiative that will be rolled out in 26 designated towns.

The towns are Tullow, Bailieborough, Sixmilebridge, Skibbereen, Milford, Lusk, Gort, Milltown (Co Kerry) Clane, Urlingford, Rathdowney, Carrick-on-Shannon, Abbeyfeale, Longford town, Dunleer, Killala, Enfield, Carrickmacross, Clara, Strokestown, Tubbercurry, Roscrea, Portlaw, Moate, New Ross and Blessington.

The proposal aims to boost main street footfall and create sustainable jobs.

Business owners will be offered supports, including practical advice, financial mentoring, and marketing assistance.

"Empty shopfronts do not create jobs, attract visitors, or support local communities.

"We need to turn vacant properties into places where businesses can start, grow and succeed," Alan Dillon said.
