A charming west Wales cottage sparked a frenzy online when it went up for auction with a starting price of just £5,000. What was even more eye-catching was the adjacent plot of land behind the cottage, which went for a single bid of just £1.

The traditional two-bedroom cottage, Y Bwthyn, located in Llwynygroes near Tregaron in Ceredigion, attracted huge interest. A strong pre-auction buzz quickly translated into a flurry of online bids once Paul Fosh Auctions put it on the market.

In the end nine determined bidders went head-to-head, placing a total of 48 bids, before the cottage finally sold for £40,500 - making it eight times the guide price.

Meanwhile, the nearby plot of land, listed separately with a guide price of just £1, sold for £1 from a single bidder in an unbelievable bargain. Love dreamy Welsh homes? Sign up to our newsletter here

Following the sale, Gemma Vaughan of Paul Fosh Auctions said: "The two-bedroom bungalow in the rural hamlet of Llwynygroes, which lies within arguably one of the most beautiful and desirable rural locations in south Wales, needs work but appears to have great potential."

She added that the property, located in the scenic Cambrian Mountains, could be perfect for those seeking a renovation project to resell or perhaps a holiday let.

"It's fair to say that the property, which offers easy access to the Cors Caron Nature Reserve and the A485 linking to Lampeter and Aberystwyth, does require comprehensive renovation," Ms Vaughan added. "But the basics appear to be there with a lounge, kitchen, shower room, WC and the bedrooms."
