MARA Holdings has resumed Bitcoin accumulation with a new purchase of 1,292 BTC worth about $98.64 million. The deal signals a return to buying after the miner spent much of 2026 selling Bitcoin to support debt reduction and its expansion into artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Arkham Intelligence data showed that MARA completed the transaction through FalconX’s over-the-counter desk. The average purchase price was $76,347 per Bitcoin, placing the total value close to $100 million.

MARA Returns to Bitcoin Accumulation

During the first half of 2026, MARA sold more than 20,880 BTC for about $1.5 billion. The company used the proceeds to reduce debt and fund data centers built for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads.

MARA also used part of the funds to repurchase convertible bonds due in 2030 and 2031. These moves formed part of a broader restructuring plan that shifted capital toward new infrastructure while lowering long-term debt.

After months of selling, MARA’s operating wallets held 9,658 BTC, valued at about $729.7 million at a Bitcoin price of $75,494. On-chain data also showed that more than 25,000 BTC remained in custody with Fidelity Custody.

The latest purchase adds to those reserves and shows that Bitcoin remains part of the company’s treasury strategy. MARA continues to hold one of the largest Bitcoin positions among publicly traded mining companies.

Mining Costs Pressure the Sector

The purchase comes as Bitcoin miners face rising costs. CoinShares reported that the average cost of mining one BTC for listed miners reached $75,500 in the second quarter of 2026.

Bitcoin traded near $58,400 at the end of that quarter, which placed many operators below breakeven levels. In June, average hash price also fell to a record low of $27.7 per PH/s per day.

Industry pressure has pushed some miners to reduce operations. Core Scientific paid $41.9 million to cancel an equipment order covering 15 EH/s, while several smaller miners started winding down capacity.

MARA continues to expand into AI and high-performance computing while keeping Bitcoin on its balance sheet. The latest purchase shows that the company is maintaining both parts of its business strategy while the mining sector adjusts to higher costs without ending its core cryptocurrency mining operations entirely.
